Day 1:
I was on my way to scope out the land when I heard the blaring of a trumpet or wind instrument of some kind. Could there be others? The question rang in my head as I made my down to the beach where the sound was coming from. Coming out of the forest I was instantly blinded by the sun. Disoriented, not knowing where I was going. At this point I didn’t care, whatever was going to happen would happen. With my choir behind me, I stumbled about trying hard to conceal my utter exhaustion from the heat. There was Simon, Maurice, Bill, Robert, Harold, Henry and Roger. Ah, Yes! Boys of all sizes, however none of them seem to be adults. I was hesitant at first, I felt I was intruding by joining in their meeting halfway through. But there is an upside to this, new faces makes a new identity possible. Ah! I will be Merridew. I am the leader of the choir. Leader, leader! The word leader gives me such happiness and pride, however it is tainted with greed. I see the way they look at the boy who made the sounds, even my choir is in complete awe of him. Ralph, I think it was. I do not care for the others and don’t need to know their names, all except the fat one. The inevitability of a vote for leader drew closer as Ralph sat there with the shell balanced on his knees. Though he didn’t move very much he commanded everyone with such grace, the truth is I envied him.

After the vote, Ralph assigned my choir to be the hunters, he willingly let me be in charge of my choir. The fat boy began to ramble and I paid no attention other than for him to stop talking. I had zoned out for a second but suddenly everyone was calling him piggy. We were asked to explore the territory to see if it was indeed an Island. I volunteered myself without knowing what would ensue. I volunteered because I wanted to show everyone that I was brave. We walked around the woods and up pink granite cliffs and I have to admit it was pretty BORING. However, when we got to a cliff that was near the summit of a huge mountain, it got interesting. We heaved with all our might and with Simon, Ralph and I, we were able to push it aside. It was a true sense of accomplishment and it was the best I had felt since arriving on this horrible peace of land. As we scrambled to summit it became apparent that we were surrounded by water. As I hit the top, an involuntary gasp of amazement left me, oops, they probably think I'm soft or something. And they'd be right! Wait I'm getting sidetracked. Let me explain, I had brought my knife just in case we encountered anything in the wild. And as we walked down from the pink cliffs and mountain top, we heard rustling in the bushes. At first I was scared and then I remembered that I had to prove myself to everyone else, I had to kill it. The word was new to me, but in the setting, it seemed right, I raised my hand ready to slash, it was trapped, that is no way to go, I let it loose. A wuss, a coward, that's what they think of me I'm sure of it. Let be known that I will not let it go next time. Next time, I will sink my knife bravely into the flesh and it will not have my mercy, I assure you all that it won't!
When I first blew the conch I wasn’t sure what to expect besides some type of noise to attract attention, but what I got was a blaring siren of the wilderness. The conch came from here so it must have some purpose being here, I reasoned. I just kept blowing. Trying to get a feel for it and desperate for the knowledge of whether or not we were alone. I didn’t really expect other kids to come, but then there were at least 20 and I still hadn’t let up. That’s when I saw Jack and his choir. While he wasn’t the most collected looking, he sure was in command. He had some type of authority I understood well, see, my father is in the Navy and he was a no nonsense type of guy. I do miss my father dearly. I’ve certainly got to do what I can to stay in control of my situation. As I was saying, that Jack kid had a lot going on and as soon as he got here I knew he was gonna be cool to have around. His choir set their stuff down and Piggy suggested finding out names. Jack wasn’t the nicest to Piggy, but it wasn’t really important anyway, Piggy was quiet and kept to himself. Soon after this Merridew kid had given names he proposed a vote for leader. Why not, a good idea was a good idea, so we had ourselves our first official vote and I won. I wasn’t really concerned with that as we proceed to get down to the real fun. Just me Jack and Simon. We went on an adventure to see what was our environment and what we found was a lot more than we’d expected. First we were stranded on an island. Second that island had lots of trees and sea. Third our group of three is pretty strong. Then we found the pig.

As we were heading back to the camp we heard little squeals and without thinking we were immediately upon it. Jack took out his knife and cut the thing loose almost about to kill it. And then he didn’t. No matter how I looked at it, he just couldn’t do it. Maybe he was scared, maybe we were all scared, but in the end he couldn’t do it. What happens if he can’t. Who's gonna get our food? We’ll find a way. For today that bit of fun was enough. And so, what if he couldn’t kill it, he might be afraid of those things. Life in a paradise shouldn’t force you to do stuff like that. It’s not really his fault… Is it?
